Passionate about coaching

Graeme Menzies

Graeme is an executive coach and mentor (ILM Level 7), affiliated to the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC). He is passionate about helping people to retire well or to change direction in their career by providing appropriate support. Graeme recently retired after 30 years as a partner in a national law firm, specialising in dispute resolution.

Reflecting on his own experience, echoed by colleagues in legal, accounting and other professional service firms, Graeme identified a particular need for support and engagement from firms both before and after retirement. This provided the driver for Futurum Group which aims to make retirement a much more positive experience for firms and individuals.

IDENTIFY AND ACHIEVE NEW GOALS

As an executive coach and mentor, Graeme continues to enjoy helping people to identify and achieve their goals and resolve issues which stand in their way.

I refer people to another firm now”

Part of it was lack of time and attention to my own affairs, but there was no real system for retiring partners, and little or no support. The person responsible for seeing partners in and out was too busy to engage and lacked emotional intelligence. I poured my soul into the business for 25 years, but I refer people to another firm now.

“I missed the status and I missed the work”

I’m planning to retire in six months – for the second time! I retired 10 years ago, aged 55. I was pleased with myself. I had the funds. I travelled extensively for a year. But I got bored. I missed colleagues. I missed the status and I missed the work. I set up another firm with a friend. We have grown it into a successful business. I have a clearer idea of what I want to do now. I think I am ready, but don’t underestimate the mental, social and other disruptive effects of retirement. I nearly drove my wife mad!”
